Hiking & Nature:

Beautifully situated at the seaside on the foot of mountain lepetimnos (or profit ilias, as the locals call it) petra is an ideal place for hiking of all sorts: trails of all degree of difficulty, starting from easy paths up to light climbing, from one hour walks up to daylong hikes.

Paths leaving directly from petra take you to marvellous virgin beaches (eftalou, ambelia..)
lead you through all sorts of landscape, luscious vegetation, rocky dry mountains, lovely olive groves, field of brushwood, sheeppastures, mountainous regions. 

The paths belong to a network of old stone trails connecting petra and the surrounding villages (as vafios, molivos, stipsi...). They were used for centuries by donkey mule or foot. These historic paths allow you to follow the steps of the traditional living in lesbos. Walking is a wonderful way to explore traditional mountain villages apart from the usual touristic places.

You can also come and discover a mystic valley of abandoned stonebuild watermills, which were still in use in the 1950's. now they are hidden between plane trees and fig trees.

A more demanding trail will lead you to the top of the 800m high lepetimnos mountain and rewards you with a marvellous view of the whole island and sometimes even a glimpse of mount athos.

Hiking is possible throughout the year. 
The weather in may and octobre is ideal for daylong hikes. 
Throughout the summer you can hike in the cooler morning and evening hours and you can combine that with a swim and a nap at the beach.
Even in the cooler winter months it never gets too cold to enjoy excursions through the vegetation which is especially green and luscious in this time.

There are busses leaving from petra that take you to other parts of the island, highly recommandable is an excursion to the area around agiassos on mount olymbos the second 800m high mountain on the island, famous for it's furtile soil, ist chestnuttrees and oranges.
The barren region around sigri and erressos offers further hiking possibilities and is worth a visit.
